Uncle Sam takes center stage in this tall color lithograph, a New Year's greeting printed in 1918 with the hopeful wish for "World peace with liberty and prosperity" in 1919. The poster was issued by United Cigars, a commercial sponsor, yet it carries the wartime sponsorship of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, a sign of how closely advertising and government messaging overlapped during the First World War. Holiday imagery like this was a common way to tie consumer goods to patriotic feeling as the armistice neared. Notice how the cheerful New Year frame sits alongside a serious hope for peace.
