Kolberg, a Baltic seaside town in Pomerania that is now Kołobrzeg in northwestern Poland, is the setting here, with its beachfront hotel and the people who gathered along the sand. Seaside hotels like this one grew up in the 19th century as sea bathing became fashionable among the middle classes, and they became centers of leisure where guests dined, strolled and took in the sea air. Given the board this image sits on, it is worth noticing how the hotel's dining rooms and terraces likely functioned as a social meeting place alongside the beach itself.
