The Hotel Wittelsbacherhof stands in Oberammergau, the Bavarian Alpine village in the Ammer valley, and its name borrows from the Wittelsbach dynasty, which ruled Bavaria for centuries. Oberammergau is best known for its Passion Play, which villagers have staged since 1634 in fulfillment of a vow made during a plague, and inns and hotels there have long housed the visitors who came to see it. Images of such houses show how a village hospitality business presented itself to travelers, with its name tying it to both local custom and the wider history of the Bavarian crown.
