Printed in New York around 1874, this color lithograph is a trade label for metallic end suspenders, the spring-clip fasteners men used to hold up trousers before belts became common. It was issued under the name West, Bradley & Carey and printed by The Graphic Co. at 39 and 41 Park Place. In the 1870s, chromolithographed labels like this one were a popular way for clothing makers to catch a customer's eye, and the caption tags on the record, "Advertisements" and "Courtship," suggest the sentimental imagery that such advertisers often used. The print was later shown in the 1974 American Sampler exhibition.
