The title, *Lost Horsemen. In Search of a Road*, sets this small sketch apart from the many Civil War scenes of battle and camp: it shows Union riders who have lost their way. The drawing, in pencil heightened with Chinese white on brown paper, dates to about November 1862, when Union cavalry in Virginia and Maryland spent long days scouting unfamiliar country with poor maps and few landmarks. Artists working for illustrated weeklies often made quick field studies like this one, which engravers later turned into pictures for readers at home who followed the war through images.
