The Roosevelt Special was the campaign train that carried Theodore Roosevelt across the Midwest in late summer 1910, and this print records its stop at Baldwin, a small town in eastern Kansas, on August 31. That same day Roosevelt delivered his "New Nationalism" address at nearby Osawatomie, a speech calling for federal regulation of business that became one of the defining statements of his later career. The photograph was made by A. Bridwell and copyrighted in September 1910, so it captures the rail tours that let the former president meet voters in small towns far from Washington.
