Captioned as Dr. N.M. Butler, this glass negative most likely shows Nicholas Murray Butler, longtime president of Columbia University, though the record notes the title is unverified and gives no date. Butler led the university from 1902 to 1945 and was a prominent voice in education and national affairs, sharing the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize with Jane Addams. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced large numbers of negatives like this one for newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the plate shows how public figures were routinely recorded for the press of that era.
