The only identifying detail for this glass negative is its title, "John Zander sports," taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its pictures. That title has not been independently verified. Bain News Service was founded in New York by George Grantham Bain around 1899 and sold news photographs to newspapers, so its negatives were made for fast reproduction rather than as art. Small glass plates like this one were a standard tool of press photographers in the early twentieth century, and sports was a regular subject. The record gives no date, so the exact occasion remains an open question.
