An old-time cider press, the kind of wooden screw or lever machine that farm families once used to crush apples into juice, is the subject here. Presses like this were a common fixture on American farms through the 19th and early 20th centuries, when nearly every rural household kept an orchard or traded for fruit and turned the surplus into cider for drinking, vinegar, and storage. Many of these machines were built from oak and iron and worked by hand, with apples ground or chopped first and then pressed in layers of cloth or straw. The image is a modern photograph shared under a Creative Commons license, so its details are best read as a record of the equipment itself.
