Titled simply "Christmas Cider," this picture links a glass of pressed apple juice to the holiday season, a pairing with deep roots in rural households. Before refrigeration, cider was pressed in autumn at the end of the harvest and stored in cellars or barrels, so it was often ready just as winter celebrations began. Warmed with cinnamon, cloves and sometimes sugar, it became a comforting drink for cold evenings and visiting guests.
