Set in the New Forest, a woodland region of Hampshire in southern England, this picture shows cider apples, fruit grown for pressing rather than for eating out of hand. Cider apples are often small and sharp or bitter, and pressing them into drink is a long tradition in southern and western England, where farms and cottages kept small orchards. The New Forest has been managed for centuries under old commoning rights, which allowed local people to graze animals and let pigs forage for fallen acorns and beech mast. The fruit against this wooded backdrop is a reminder of how orchards, livestock and forest land once worked together.
