Stacked cider barrels, the kind once common on farms and at small presses, make up the subject of this picture, which belongs to a gallery board on apples. Cider was a staple of rural American life well into the nineteenth century, when many farms pressed their own fruit each autumn and stored the juice in wooden casks to ferment. Images like this one preserve the tools of that work, which were largely replaced by commercial bottling and refrigeration in the twentieth century.
