Named on its caption card as the contralto Ernestine Schumann-Heinke, this glass negative captures a singer who was among the best-known voices of her era. Born in Austria, she performed Wagnerian roles at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and toured widely as a concert artist. The Bain News Service photographed many performers and public figures for newspaper and wire customers, so portraits like this one show how celebrities were presented to the public in the early twentieth century. The record gives no exact date, and the name rests on caption data the collection itself marks as unverified.
