Little is recorded about this picture beyond its title, "Powell," which the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card. The Library of Congress notes that the name is unverified, so the identity of the subject remains provisional. The image survives as a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain's agency, founded in New York around 1899, supplied news pictures of people and events to newspapers, and its glass plates show how press photography worked in the early twentieth century, before flexible film became common.
