The only identification on this glass negative is the single word "Damrosch," which the Bain News Service recorded without verification, so the sitter is most likely Walter Damrosch, the New York conductor and composer. He led the New York Symphony Society and conducted German repertory at the Metropolitan Opera, and he later became a familiar radio voice through NBC's music appreciation broadcasts. Bain's studio worked in New York in the early twentieth century, photographing public figures for newspapers and wire distribution. The record gives no date or occasion, but the plate still offers a glimpse of the city's musical and public life in that era.
