Walter Camp is the subject of this glass negative, a portrait of the man often called the "Father of American Football." Camp played for Yale and later coached there, and his rule changes in the 1880s and 1890s helped shape the modern game, including the line of scrimmage and the down-and-distance system. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the sitting is uncertain, but the agency's work dates from roughly 1900 to 1920.
