Few cities were as closely tied to American manufacturing as Detroit, and this stereograph shows an assembly room where chassis and motors were brought together around 1929. Keystone, the company that issued the card, sold stereo views like this one in large numbers, and when viewed through a stereoscope the paired images gave the factory floor a sense of depth that a flat print could not. By the late 1920s, Detroit automakers had refined the moving assembly line, so scenes like this one document the methods that made the city the center of the industry.
