A shark with a pilot fish at its side swims across this poster, and its title casts pneumonia as the predator and the common cold as the small companion that clears its path. Made under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, it belongs to a Depression-era body of public health art that used bold silkscreen color to reach people in clinics, schools and community halls. Its subject names health care in Hempstead, New York, and a date of December 1, 1937, stamped on the back suggests the print stayed in circulation well after its 1936 design date.
