Few places in Alabama are as closely tied to agricultural education as Tuskegee, home of Tuskegee Institute, and this view of a horse barn points to the working animals that supported the school's farm. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, made the glass negative, but the record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the Library of Congress has not verified. Bain's photographers worked mainly from about 1900 into the 1920s, so the picture probably dates to that period, when the institute's farm and trade programs were central to its mission. The record does not say what the barn held, so the building is best read alongside the school's broader history.
