Wide views of lock chambers and their steel gate frames show the scale of the engineering behind a project closely tied to Theodore Roosevelt's presidency. Roosevelt pressed for an American-built waterway across the Isthmus of Panama, and the United States took over the stalled French effort in 1904. The canal opened to shipping in 1914. Its locks raised and lowered vessels between the Atlantic and Pacific, and the massive steel gates were among the most visible parts of that work.
