A pencil and Chinese white drawing on blue-green paper shows a flag of truce near Craney Island, off Norfolk, Virginia. The record names a Lieutenant Crosby among its subjects and tentatively dates the scene to late summer 1861, a few months after Confederate forces took control of Norfolk and its navy yard. Flags of truce let boats cross between opposing lines to carry messages, arrange exchanges, or move noncombatants, and the drawing's mix of officers, women and children suggests how these crossings drew ordinary people into the war's daily routine. The soft pencil work and white highlights on blue-green paper give the scene a quiet tone.
