Few recruiting posters from 1914 relied on words alone, but this one does, and its only decoration is a small armorial device bearing the arms of King George V. Issued in London by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee and marked as the tenth in its series, it asked men to fight for king and empire at a time when Lord Kitchener was calling for hundreds of thousands of volunteers. The plain type and direct plea reflect the urgency of those first months of the war, when enlistment rather than conscription was still the main route into the army.
