Martha's Vineyard is an island, so this plate from a Massachusetts atlas shows a place that sits well outside the Cape Cod region its gallery board suggests. Atlas plates of this kind were engraved and printed to record property lines, roads, and town boundaries, often with the names of landowners placed on their holdings. Island maps from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are useful to researchers because they capture the layout of farms, villages, and shoreline before much later development. Notice the fine lettering and the way the coastline is drawn, since those details show the mapmaker's care and the standards of commercial cartography of the period.
