Drawn in ink on bristol board in 1918, this cartoon by Gropper casts President Woodrow Wilson as the figure forming the League of Nations, according to a note on its back. The moment came as the First World War was ending, when Wilson championed a league to settle disputes among nations before they reached armed conflict. He presented its covenant at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. Commentary cartoons of the period often reduced such diplomacy to a single pictured act, which makes this drawing useful for seeing how the plan was debated. The United States Senate ultimately refused to join the League, a fact that adds weight to the image in hindsight.
