The Statue of Liberty and a group of boats appear together in this 1917 recruiting poster, pairing the nation's symbol of freedom with the work of the sea. The City of Boston Committee on Public Safety issued it, and Smith & Porter Press printed it, in the year the United States entered the First World War. Recruiting posters of this period competed for attention on busy streets and in shop windows, so bold color and a single direct appeal were the main tools. Its message ties the call to enlist to the wider effort to build up the Navy during the war.
