Noyon, a cathedral town in the Oise valley of northern France, was badly damaged during the First World War, when it lay near the front and changed hands more than once. This glass negative shows a feeding of the poor there, a scene that reflects the hunger many French civilians endured under occupation and bombardment. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified notes left by the Bain News Service, the press photo agency whose collection this belongs to. The subject still points to the relief work that reached devastated French communities during and after the fighting.
