The record identifies this glass negative as Prof. F.W. Taussig, though the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service supplied and has not been independently verified. Frank William Taussig taught economics at Harvard for much of his career and was one of the most respected American authorities on tariff policy, writing a widely cited history of the tariff in the United States. He also chaired the U.S. Tariff Commission during the First World War. Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early 20th century, so portraits like this one were typically made for press use.
