The record names this sitter as Prof. A.G. Webster, though the title comes from caption cards and data that the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. A physicist named Arthur Gordon Webster taught at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, in the early 1900s, so the name may point to him, but the identification should be treated as provisional. The Bain News Service, a New York-based agency, produced large numbers of glass negatives for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Its portraits of academics and public figures were usually made for publication, so the image reflects how a scientist of the period was presented to the press.
