Comerio is a hill town in the interior of Puerto Rico, far from the coastal cities that usually appear in early photographs of the island. The caption card dates the picture only to around the 191- decade, which places it in the years after the United States took control of Puerto Rico in 1898, when American officials and photographers documented the island's towns, roads, and people. Interior communities like Comerio relied on coffee, sugar, and small-scale farming, and the surrounding hills shaped how their settlements grew. Because the date is uncertain, the scene is best read as a general view of rural Puerto Rico in the early twentieth century.
