Joseph Pennell's pastel *Casa Jankowitz* shows a Venetian lodging house, and the picture is tied to the late years of James McNeill Whistler, whose known haunts in the city are recorded in its subject headings. Pennell, an American illustrator and printmaker, drew and signed the work in pastel on blue-gray paper around 1901, the period when he and his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell, were close to Whistler. The sheet's canal and lodging-house subjects reflect Venice's appeal to visiting artists in the early 1900s, when its waterways and old façades drew many draftsmen.
