First to Fight" sets this 1917 poster apart with a slogan that became closely tied to the Marine Corps, and its text promises "real fighting with real fighters" to men seeking action. Sidney H. Riesenberg designed it as the United States entered the First World War, when the Marines were working to expand their ranks quickly. Its beach and amphibious subject reflected the service's identity as a landing force, which Marines had trained for well before the war. Note the bold color and the direct challenge to "test your courage," which show the style of wartime recruiting art.
