This map traces the battle across its three days, July 1 through 3, 1863, when the Union and Confederate armies fought over the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg and the ridges around it. The first day's clashes west and north of town gave way to a Union line on Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge, which became the ground for the climactic fighting of July 3, including Pickett's Charge. Maps like this one help readers follow how the positions shifted from day to day and why the Union's hold on the high ground mattered when Robert E. Lee withdrew south on July 4.
