This view looks up the Conemaugh gorge from about a half mile above the stone railroad bridge, the spot where a mass of wreckage from the May 31, 1889, flood piled up and became the most notorious feature of the disaster. The South Fork dam had failed upstream, and the flood swept through the valley, leaving the gorge jammed with houses, rail cars, and timber. Sackett & Carlson, a photography firm in Sycamore, Illinois, issued numbered series of views like this one, which were sold to a national audience eager to see the damage.
