A ruined Catholic church stands in this view, one of the damaged buildings that the photographers Sackett & Carlson, of Sycamore, Illinois, recorded after the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889. The flood followed the failure of a dam on the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River, which sent a wall of water through the valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The "No. 10" in the caption suggests the picture was part of a numbered set of disaster views sold to a public eager to see the destruction.
