A round window set into the side of a rail car gives this picture its character. Portholes borrowed their form from ship design, and some passenger cars and vestibule doors used them to admit light while keeping the walls sturdy. Through such an opening, a traveler could glimpse the passing countryside, the platform, or the coupling of cars along the line. Railroad photographers often framed scenes through windows like this one, which turned a mechanical detail into a view of the journey itself.
