The title on this glass negative describes a monk's fingerprints, though the label comes from the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified. The plate is dated to about 1921, when the Washington, D.C., firm was producing large numbers of photographs for newspapers and general sale. The Library of Congress received the collection as a gift in 1947, and the negative shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual deterioration of its original coatings, a common sign of age in glass plates of this period. Fingerprinting was by then a standard method of identification, which gives the subject a documentary character worth noting.
