Little is recorded about the subject of this glass negative, which carries the title Betty Ridsdale. That name comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified. The image is dated to about 1921, when the Washington, D.C., firm was producing large numbers of portraits and views on glass plates. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coating, which affects how the image reads today.
