Sheet music covers like this one were a common way to sell songs in the 1860s, and this example puts a balloon at the center to catch a buyer's eye. It was issued by Wm. A. Pond & Co., a New York firm that was one of the leading music publishers of the period. Ballooning drew wide public interest in America by then, partly because Thaddeus Lowe's balloons had served the Union Army during the Civil War, so an aerial subject would have seemed timely. The color lithograph shows how publishers relied on lively artwork to market popular tunes.
