Titled simply "Up in a Balloon," this lithograph came from the New York firm Currier & Ives around 1876, a period when the firm was turning out large numbers of color prints for a mass market. Balloon ascensions had become popular public spectacles in the United States by the 1870s, drawing crowds to fairgrounds and city parks, and the firm often treated such novelties with a lighthearted touch. The print is catalogued as number 6804 in the firm's standard catalog raisonné, which makes it easy to compare with the other sporting and popular scenes the company issued that decade.
