This 1907 map shows Rocky Mount, North Carolina, from an elevated, angled viewpoint, the style many towns used to show streets, buildings, and rail lines in a single view. Rocky Mount grew up around the Tar River and the rail line that crossed it, so the layout of tracks and depots is often the first thing to notice. Bird's-eye views like this were usually commissioned to promote a town to investors and new residents, so they show local ambition as much as the actual ground. Look for the railroad corridor and the river bend to see how the town was organized around its transportation.
