Al Jolson, the singer and stage performer, is the subject of this glass negative, which belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service was a Manhattan press photography agency, and its staff photographed theatrical figures, politicians and news events in the early twentieth century for newspapers and magazines. Jolson, famous for his blackface minstrel-style performances and his role in early talking pictures, was a leading Broadway name of that period. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
