The only identifying detail in the record is the surname Farrar, taken from the caption card or negative label that the Bain News Service supplied, and the record itself marks that label as unverified. The name most often linked to it is the American soprano Geraldine Farrar, a leading Metropolitan Opera singer in New York in the 1910s and a widely photographed celebrity of the period, but the record does not confirm which Farrar appears here. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of glass negatives, made by a New York news photography firm active in the early twentieth century, and it shows how such agencies documented public figures of their time.
