The sitter is recorded only as "M.A. Iogolevitch," and the Library of Congress notes that this name comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card, so the identity should be treated as provisional. The image survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Bain's New York-based agency, the Bain News Service, made and sold news and feature photographs in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates capture the portraits and events that filled newspapers of that era. Because no date is recorded, the picture is best understood within that broader period of press photography.
