The headline warns that hunger would follow the loss of Germany's eastern provinces, and it calls on Germans to "save the East" by volunteering. Printed in 1919, the poster dates from the months after the armistice, when the Allied blockade still restricted food imports and the Treaty of Versailles was being negotiated. The eastern territories at issue, including Posen and parts of West Prussia, were contested as the new Polish state took shape, and German volunteer units were recruited to defend them. The title credits the text to C.H. Becker, and the color lithograph shows how wartime poster techniques were turned to postwar political appeals.
