Few portraits of a 16th-century Spanish admiral were made in the 1790s, which sets this engraving apart. It honors Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the naval commander who founded St. Augustine, Florida, in 1565. The print follows a drawing by Josef Camarón and was engraved by Francisco de Paula Martí in 1791, more than two centuries after the admiral's death in 1574. Images like this one reflected a late eighteenth-century Spanish interest in its colonial founders, and the print was later shown in the 2006 exhibition *American Origins*.
