Alfred Stieglitz's photogravure of a dirigible, dated 1910 and printed on Japan tissue, ran as plate 8 in the October 1911 issue of *Camera Work*, the journal he edited to promote photography as a fine art. Airships were still a novelty in those years, and an artist-photographer choosing one as a subject reflects the period's fascination with flight. The Manhattan Photogravure Company produced the print in New York, and the gravure process was prized for its soft, continuous tones, which suited the smooth curves of the airship's envelope.
