A 1942 Government Printing Office poster carries the line "You bet I'm going back to sea!" and urges former seamen to register at their nearest U.S. Employment Service office. That year German submarines were sinking merchant ships off the American coast and across the Atlantic, and shipping companies needed experienced crews as quickly as they could find them. The poster's confident, plain-spoken tone was typical of wartime recruitment, which tended to appeal to pride and patriotism more than to detailed terms. It shows how the government tried to draw skilled workers back into maritime jobs.
