Sir Matthew Hale, the English jurist shown here, rose from a modest legal training to become Chief Justice of the King's Bench under Charles II, serving from 1671 until his death in 1676. He is best remembered for his writings on English law, especially the *History of the Pleas of the Crown*, which was published after his death and remained a standard reference for generations of lawyers. His career spanned the upheaval from the Interregnum to the Restoration, and his reputation for integrity made him one of the most respected judges of his age. The record gives no date for this engraving by Phillibrown, so its exact origin is unclear.
