This glass negative is labeled "W.F. Friedman" and dated March 4, 1924, though the Library of Congress notes that the title came from unverified data the National Photo Company recorded on the plate or its sleeve. William F. Friedman later became one of the most important American codebreakers, and his team's work in the late 1930s and early 1940s helped break Japan's Purple diplomatic cipher. The plate belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, a body of Washington, D.C., studio and press photography. Streaks and blemishes on the image come from the natural breakdown of the original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
