The name on this negative, F.W. Friedman, is the only identification the record offers, and the Library notes that it comes from unverified data written on the glass or its sleeve. The plate is a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, dated to about 1924 from others in its batch, and it entered the collection as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The National Photo Company made large numbers of such negatives in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century. Many of these plates now show streaks and blemishes where the original coatings have deteriorated with age.
